As professionals in the medical field we often fall short in taking our own advice, which in the end affects our own health and our lives. We give parents brochures and pamphlets to supplement the conversations we have. It's called anticipatory guidance. As adults have access to information from a myriad of sources including books and magazines, resources online, and our associations. If anything we probably have an abundance of information with a lack of taking the next steps towards using the information to live our best life. This is true for our health, our wealth, and our overall well being.

It is, however, meant to bring this truth to your awareness and encourage you to seek ways to restore balance to your body so it can do what it does best - heal itself.

High fructose corn syrup - As ubiquitous a sweetener as it is, I will label read until I find something without it. I have read that it is not a "bad" ingredient, but I just do not like it. It will always be a cheap, long lasting sweetener that manufacturers use instead of regular sugar to keep cost down and make the product last longer on the shelf. What about children? How does a sick child behave? How do you judge a healthy child? Is there a connection? If you became ill, what would be your first reaction? Obviously you'll want to get better. And how would you get better? Do you go to the medicine cabinet, pharmacy or even the doctor and get medicines, take them and hope the sickness will go.

Moderation is the key to everything. Many people operate in Healthy living advice an either/or mode - either they are following a program perfectly, or they are simply going wild with their eating habits. A true lifestyle plan will be easy to follow because you won't have to worry about counting calories or weighing foods. Why? Because you are operating from a zone called moderation. This zone is tough for many people to find, and sometimes it requires going through a strict dietary regimen in order to create the control you deserve to have over food, instead of allowing food to control you.

Once you have started eating well, it is time to go out and get some physical activity! Now, this does not mean that you have to incorporate a rigorous physical workout into your daily routine. Just including small amounts of physical activity in your life will make a difference. So take the stairs instead of the escalator, or walk to the corner store instead of driving four blocks. Start slowly and incorporate more physical activity into your life, and you will be amazed at how quickly the results will add up.
